Major League Lacrosse in Portland August 9!

The Portland LumberJax are hosting MLL PDX at Hillsboro Stadium. This men’s field lacrosse event features top contenders Philadelphia Barrage vs. the New Jersey Pride at 7:30 pm. In the week leading up to this exciting evening, there will be clinics for all ages and a boy’s/men’s tournament. The day of the event will include the finals of these tournaments, live music and the MLL game. Volunteers are needed – must be 18 or older. All information can be found at www.mllpdx.com.

Jay Castle Scholarship Announced

MAJOR LEAGUE LACROSSE (MLL) makes its Oregon debut on August 9th.

Two-time defending world champion Philadelphia Barrage will take on the New Jersey Pride in their final regular season game at Hillsboro Stadium. This game will be the final event of MLL PDX, a week long festival featuring lacrosse activities all over the Portland area from Tuesday, August 6th until the MLL game on Saturday night. OGLA is now taking nominations for the inaugural Jay Castle Memorial Scholarship.

To honor Jay (a parent of a former player) and his unique contributions to the game, the OGLA Board will award a $500.00 scholarship to one VARSITY, college-bound graduating senior player. The recipient of this scholarship will exemplify sportsmanship, leadership, commitment to the game, and be in good academic standing.

Varsity coaches may nominate ONE senior player. Nominations are due by May 15,2008. The Scholarship will be announced at State Finals on May 22.

WHAT: This year, Oregon Elite will travel to Maryland to compete in the All-American Showcase/Capital Cup Lacrosse Tournament (June 19 - 22rd). This is a college recruiting opportunity for RISING JR and SR players, who will compete against teams from across the country and the best talent in the US. Tryout Flyer

This is a great chance for your players who wish to continue their lacrosse career in college to start that plan in motion. Oregon Elite has been extremely successful in helping players achieve this dream. Several players from each of the last 5 Elite teams are now playing at Division I, Division III and college club programs.

HOW: Please send a team list with all the players from your school who you wish to nominate (name, grade, position and US Lax number) to Patty at pbeghtel@comcast.net by April 4th. Please send with the subject line "<Team Name> Elite Nominations". We expect ALL PLAYERS on this list to
attend the tryout - this isn't a resume building /honors exercise, we need to know who is coming to pre-assign numbers and break into random groups prior to the 19th. A release form will be sent to you for all players - this will be your confrimation that we have received your list.

Final Schedule and Game Change

The league schedule was finalized on Feb 15th. From this point forward, should a team need to change a game:
  1. Email a FULL explanation of circumstances to OGLA at oregongirlslax@gmail.com BEFORE contacting the opponent and filling out any paperwork.OGLA Board will review the request and decide whether or not to allow the game change.
  2. If approved, team will need to follow process established for changes to the draft schedule.
Game changes will only be allowed in extreme circumstances.

This is a necessary process to ensure we have refs at all games and to keep the schedule 'on schedule' and moving through the season. OGLA thanks teams for their help in this effort.


EVALUATORS NEEDED for Oregon All-Star (Elite) try-outs on April 19th at Lake Oswego High School -- 9:00am to 4:00 pm. Evaluators should have thorough knowledge of the game to help with selection of the summer travel team. No coaches, please. Contact: pbeghtel@comcast.net if interested.

"Junior Umpires-to-be" Youth Referee Clinic

Oregon Food Bank - North Portland
OWLUA is putting on a third clinic this year for those under 18 years old. These clinics are for "Junior Umpires-to-be", and for adults who will umpire Youth games only.

Check in at 9:30, with the clinic running 10-3. There will be approx. an hour lunch break. Lunch is 'on your own'. Pre-registration fee is $25. On-site fee is $30.

Attendees who are already a US Lacrosse member will need to bring their member # so we can register them as an 'umpire' through our board. No additional fee to USLA is required. Coaches who are already a USLA member will NOT be issued a rule book, as they get one from USLA as part of their membership.

This is a great opportunity for high schoolers to earn extra money and increase their game knowledge! (NOTE: Umpires must be 2 years older than the group they ref.) More info at owlua@msn.com. Flyer.

2008 REF FEES TO BE PREBILLED

7 v 7 EVENT AT University of Oregon is scheduled for February 2. Registration and information at www.goducks.com. Team rosters of 10 players will be coached by UO players. Registration closes at end of January. Coaches CANNOT be involved in any way with their teams prior to Feb 18th start-of-season!! Players must initiate the team and organize the effort - a leadership skills opportunity!! U of O players will be 'coach for a day' for each team; coaches may shadow and learn from them during the event, but cannot coach. Any participation with teams by coaches prior to start of season will be subject to OGLA review and action.

OGLA REFERENCE MANUAL AND FORMS are now on line for your use here.

SATURDAY GAMES this year will be played March 15, April 5 and April 12. These are non-league games between the South and the other leagues. The goal is to have all non-league games at the beginning of the season before teams get into League play.

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED: The first round of scholarship requests are due NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 4 not December 15 as the form indicates). These scholarships can be used for team equipment, uniforms, dues help for players in need, etc. The second round for summer travel team and camps scholarships will be May 1. The 2007 OGLA All-State Teams Announced

Congratulations to the following players, recognized as the top players in Oregon. Coaches from the state's 28 high school girls varsity lacrosse programs recently voted their choices for First, Second, and Third teams, along with Honorable Mentions, based on players' performances during the regular season. All-State team members have been selected for their game skills, attitude, contributions to their teams, and their honoring of the game of lacrosse.
